It is largely surburban with few major employers other than CocaCola which operates a large manufacturing and distribution site in Foots Cray.  The local State and private schools are well regarded and there are three academically selective Grammar Schools in the constituency.

There is a large general hospital, Queen Mary's Sidcup which the NHS Board for London intends to to reduce in status.

A large proportion of residents commute to central London, many police and prison officers also reside in the area which, because of its open spaces and schools, is a prime location for family life close to the Capital.
